An inflamed esophagus is much more common than we think. It is primarily the result of our unhealthy diet, which is high in unsaturated and trans fats, and added sugars. Not only our esophagus, but also our stomach, it suffers as a result. The unhealthier we eat, the greater our risk of heartburn, heartburn and reflux. Obviously, this has a negative effect on the health of our esophagus, so we can prevent esophagus inflammation, or relieve its annoying symptoms with healthy eating.
But what is the right diet against esophageal inflammation?
An inflammation of our esophagus is therefore the result of unhealthy eating with a lot of fats and sugars. As a result, we experience heartburn and heartburn. Reflux, or the reflux of heartburn into our esophagus, is the main cause of an inflamed esophagus.
Esophagus: The causes of an inflamed esophagus are:
- Regular reflux of stomach acid into our esophagus
- Nausea and vomiting
- The use of some medicines, such as aspirin and anti-inflammatory agents
- Viruses, fungi, bacteria or all kinds of conditions that weaken our immune system and natural resistance.
- The main symptoms of an inflamed esophagus
- Difficulty swallowing
- Pain when swallowing
- Pain, burning and pressure behind our breastbone
- Perforation of our esophagus
Esophagus: How is esophagitis treated?
The treatment of an inflamed esophagus primarily depends on the cause. In most cases, antacids, anti-inflammatories and possibly painkillers are prescribed. We can also do a lot to prevent inflammation of our esophagus or to alleviate its symptoms. We can do this in the first place by:
- Avoid spicy dishes as much as possible
- Avoid hard foods including nuts, sit, seeds and raw vegetables.
- Especially eat soft foods such as apple sauce, mashed potatoes, soft fruit, custard and pudding
- Limit consumption of acidic foods and carbonated drinks as much as possible
- Use as little alcohol and tobacco as possible

- Chew well and take small bites
Esophagus: The Reflux Diet against an inflamed esophagus
Do you regularly suffer from heartburn, heartburn and a painful, inflamed esophagus? Then this reflux diet is definitely for you. With this diet you do not eat food that gives an extra inflammation of the esophagus in hand, such as:
- Coffee: contains caffeine, a substance that weakens the sphincter between our esophagus and our stomach, so it no longer closes hermetically. For example, the heartburn flows undisturbed from our stomach to our esophagus
- Soft drinks: with heartburn and a painful esophagus, we should definitely avoid sour soft drinks. These are almost as acidic as heartburn

- Tomatoes: tomatoes also weaken our muscles, with the well-known result. Dishes with tomatoes (sauce) have the same effect
- Chocolate: contains caffeine, and many unhealthy saturated and trans fats. If you can’t resist eating chocolate, opt for dark chocolate with at least 75% (and preferably more) raw chocolate
- Milk: initially neutralizes the stomach acid, but causes an inflammatory reaction so that the sphincter between esophagus and stomach is no longer sufficiently closed

- Wholemeal bread: with a sore and inflamed it is best to eat wholemeal bread instead of white bread. Bread absorbs the heartburn in your throat and esophagus. With sour belching, a piece of wholemeal bread immediately provides the necessary relief
- Honey:immediately removes the burning sensation in your esophagus and throat. Honey has a cooling effect and provides a protective laye
